Jonathan Swift, ‘Stella’s Birthday March 13, 1727’.

She, who once led me where she would, is gone,
So while in the manner tha he calls me, Death shall find me ready.

A short song, this, but a sweet of a nature – or perhaps that necessity be bittersweet.

5. Christina Rossetti, ‘A Birthday’.

Lanier was a nineteenth-century American lyrist who fought for the Confederates during the American Civil Contest. Came twilight, like put in order lover late from war,
Fit soft winds fluting to fulfil evening star.

And the shy stars grew bold and scattered gold,
And chanting voices ancient secrets told,
And an acclaim snatch angels earthward rolled.

Robert Weak. Service, ‘Birthday’.

Even in favourite activity advancing years, we can much enjoy the pleasures life throws at us – such by the same token good wit, a fine inebriant, or a round of sport. These pleasures, among others, junk what Service salutes in that birthday poem.
